I am honored to be performing as part of the “Artistic Interludes” production with Dance Innovations, who have choreographed pieces to my songs! Other highlights of the program include Michael Crawford- principal with American Repertory Ballet, and the students of the Newark School of the Arts. Would love to see you at this very special event.

I Love New York # 29: Faith is not always lost in...
There is a woman in her 70’s who walks around Thompkins Square park, somewhat dirty and unkempt, but probably not homeless, carrying her belongings in what looks like at least a 6 month old plastic shopping bag. She shuffles along at about six inches per step; I assume it takes her at least 10 minutes to walk one block. But in spite of all the mess of people rushing by her with lattes, the...
I love New York #28: It's still a small town.
I left my phone at Odessa (the Ukranian diner on Ave. A) one night. Thankfully, I called the next afternoon and was informed that they did indeed still have my phone. I was estatic just at the prospect of getting it back, even if it were slightly abused, having been shoved around in a junk drawer with some forgotten half open ketchup packets. But by the time I got there, not only was my phone...

We can't give up on art.
“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, “O me! O life!… of...

When it’s honest enough that the thought of singing it for people you know makes you just a bit uncomfortable, that’s a good start.

I love new York # 27- No business plan too small.
A man in his early thirties walks around the perimeter of Tompkins Sqare park holding up an open Marlboro box asking passers-by and outdoor diners, “Want to buy a cigarette?” Nobody bites. He’s got dreadlocks but is wearing a clean button down shirt, and looks like he trimmed his stylish scruff this morning. I guess everyone needs a few extra dollars these days, and they’re...

There is a bird in Tompkins square park that sings his morning song all through the night, every night. He must be thrown off by the park lights, or an overdose of white bread hot dog buns, or pollution. I know how he feels.

I get my morning coffee from a small cafe owned and run solely by a middle aged, youthfully minded Italian couple. He’s a mild mannered struggling sculptor, she’s tough and often has this look on her face like she’s just gotten done lecturing him. In most other New York coffee outlets, whether it be a bodega, a Starbucks, or even a larger mom-n-pop establishment, the service is...
I love New York #20- Who said New Yorkers aren't...
Dinner at the counter of a 50’s style diner in Chelsea. A local homeless man pokes his head in, and the behind-the-counter cook, who knows him by name, tells him, “No raisin bagels today, but I can give you a poppy.” The cook toasts it and does it up with butter and cheese while the homeless man ducks back outside, then hesitantly sneaks back in to sit at the counter for a moment before the cook...

The satisfaction of living in Manhattan has as much to do with being able to readily escape all the madness as it does with being a part of it.
Like many other days, I’m holed up in my apartment writing, and hearing all the commotion outside on the streets; today it’s some most likely steroid pumping macho guys yelling, trying to out-man each other, another day it might be drunk kids...
I love New York # 18
Crammed next to five complete strangers at a five foot study table in a Starbucks in midtown. No one makes eye contact, or even looks up. Everyone is doing some kind of work on their laptops; most of them are also intermittently checking their Facebook, which is probably making them less productive (but maybe more inspired, which will make them more productive). Except for the middle aged woman....
I love New York #15
I met a Union Square self proclamed “motivational artist” today who was giving away tiny love letters written on thin tissue paper, carefully rolled and tied with red string. Mine says:
“If you keep on doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve been getting! May it be something positive and worthwhile.”
He has a graduate degree,...

Nine Reasons to love New York City today
(besides all the obvious)
1. Eavesdropping on the subway.
2. Starbucks just about every 4 blocks, where you can always use the bathroom.
3. Bodegas that are almost as frequent, where you can always buy a cheap umbrella if it starts raining.
4. It seems like all of your old friends are planning on moving here. And if they’re not, they wish they were.
5. When it’s cold, there is...
New Singles on MySpace, and what's coming in 2010
My new singles, “Gonna Get Better” and “Keep You Warm” are now up on www.myspace.com/amyregan and www.amyregan.com. Listen and enjoy! And if you’d like to buy your very own copy, both songs will be up on iTunes in early 2010.
Also, the singles release show at Rockwood Music Hall was reviewed by Riveting Riffs magazine, who said: “One undeniable aspect of...
Who said New Yorkers aren't kind?
…in spite of being jaded. Conversation between two new yorkers in the world trade center path station:
Construction worker: Are you done with that paper?
Business man: No, actually I didn’t read it yet. (He starts to enter the turnstile, then turns around.) Y’know what, you can have this. They always have this paper at my other job.
Construction worker: You sure? ……thanks!
(the business man...

Maybe I’ll go to Amsterdam, or maybe I’ll go to Rome, and rent me a grand piano and put some flowers ‘round my room…
